“Radicalisation via E-Jihad in an era of interactive social media: A closer look at Al-Shabaab, Boko Haram and ISIS ” in Tchudin, A., Buchanan-Clarke, S., Moffat, C., Coutts, L., Thomas-Russel, S. (eds.), Extremism in Africa: Volume Two. Jakana, Johannes

Abstract

This chapter looks at hope Boko Haram, al-Shabaab and ISIS (in Sudan) use social media to radicalisation and recruitment of youths. The chapter shows that no social media strategy is the same and that the 'in' and 'out' groups of terrorist groups change with time and as needed. Lastly, it is also determined that older terrorist groups have a more sophisticated application of social media than their younger counterparts. Recommendations to help curd the radicalisation and recruitment process via social media are also provided.
