Bio

Dr. Jacob Udo-Udo Jacob is a Visiting International Scholar in the International Studies program of Dickinson College. His teaching and research interest is located at the intersection between communications, conflicts, and peacebuilding in Nigeria, Somalia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Jacob visits Dickinson from the American University of Nigeria where he was Chair of the Communications & Multimedia Design program and Interim Dean in the School of Arts & Science.

Jacob is a strong advocate of the integrative and applied teaching and learning methods. Students in his classes have developed award-winning civic engagement projects, including social justice campaigns that won first place in Fall 2016 at the Africa regional finals of the Facebook Global Digital Challenge; and second place at the global finals of the competition in Spring 2017, out of 160 universities in 72 countries.

Jacob has led the implementation of some very important internationally-funded projects in support of peacebuilding in Nigeria including a US State Department-funded CVE project on peace journalism, involving training and working with a network of journalists, editors and influencers to facilitate a more nuanced coverage of the Boko Haram insurgency. He also led the Interactive Radio Instruction component of the USAID-funded Technology Enhanced Learning for All (TELA) project that reached over 22,000 mainly out-of-school-children displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency in Northeast Nigeria. He is the author of 'Convincing Rebel Fighters to Disarm: UN Information Operations in the Democratic Republic of Congo' (DeGruyter 2017) in addition to several articles in international peer-reviewed journals. Jacob earned his PhD in Communication Studies (Strategic Communications) from the University of Leeds, United Kingdom under the supervision of the eminent propaganda historian, Professor Philip M. Taylor.

Jacob has held visiting positions at New York University's Center on International Cooperation and at Cardiff University's School of Journalism, Media and Culture, Wales.
