Summary
On May 18, 2022, the USIP Justice and Security Dialogues Program and RESOLVE discussed the continuum of formalization of security actors in hybrid security contexts in the Sahel, as well as what lends community-based armed groups credibility and how international actors can engage with them to support local peace and security. The event convened international and regional experts on Burkina Faso and Nigeria, with policymakers and practitioners among the participants. This event built upon years of work at USIP analyzing the incentives, behaviors, and relationships of community-based armed groups. This event was held under Chatham House Rules.
