Project Launch Roundtable: Community-based Armed Groups in Sub-Saharan Africa

Summary

On 7 November 2018, the RESOLVE Network hosted the project launch expert roundtable for its research initiative on Community-based Armed Groups (CBAGs) in Sub-Saharan Africa, supported by USAID. Thirty individuals from the D.C. community of interest focusing on the African security environment convened for a two-hour discussion of the dynamics and drivers relating to CBAGs, the spectrum of actors and agents that fall under the CBAGs umbrella, and national and international efforts to engage, manage, or transform these actors.

The initiative aims to provide key stakeholders with contextual information on the dynamics of community-based armed groups and current, prospective, and past approaches to engage, manage, and transform them. The project grapples with a complicated series of questions and decisions negotiated by stakeholders operating in conflict-affected societies across Sub-Saharan Africa.

The event was under the Chatham House Rule.
