Roundtable: Women and Community-Based Armed Groups in West Africa
Summary
On April 27, 2021, the RESOLVE Network, together with USAID, hosted a virtual private roundtable on gendered dynamics of community-based armed groups (CBAGs) in West Africa. Dr. Jakana Thomas presented her findings from her RESOLVE research report, Duty and Defiance: Women in Community-based Armed Groups in West Africa, while leading experts in the field joined to provide commentary. The discussion explored how West African CBAGs facilitate women’s engagement with politics, create avenues for female expressions of anger, commitment to community values and national identity, and enable women to push for change in their communities by opening spaces for female participation.
The discussion was under the Chatham House Rule.
