Summary

On May 15, 2019, the RESOLVE Network and the U.S. Institute of Peace hosted an invite-only roundtable that will showcase comparative findings and policy recommendations resulting from the Berghof Foundation’s participatory research project, “Opportunities for Preventing Violent Extremism in the Western Balkans” as well as the Department of State’s Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations' (State-CSO) Countering Violent Extremism Baseline Program’s Bosnia research findings. Featuring speakers from the Berghof Foundation, the Atlantic Initiative, the Kosovar Centre for Security Studies, and State-CSO, the roundtable will explore driving factors of community vulnerability and resilience to violent extremism in four countries in the Western Balkans—Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, and North Macedonia. 

The roundtable provided an opportunity for participants to engage in active discussions about the violent extremism challenge in the Western Balkans and implications of the research findings for policy and practice. This event was supported by the RESOLVE Network Western Balkans Initiative, which seeks to provide policymakers and practitioners new insights and analysis on the dynamics of violent extremism in the region.
