May 2020 | Unpacking Violent Extremism in the Philippines

This month, RESOLVE highlights recommended readings from our policy note, "Unpacking Violent Extremism: Dynamics in the Philippines." In this note, Joseph Franco discusses how overstating the importance of foreign ideology in driving conflict in the Philippines obscures localized drivers that must be addressed to prevent further violence. To enhance the policy note, Mr. Franco suggests readings on the non-ideological roots of conflict in Mindanao, on indigenous sources of political violence in the Philippines, on resentment over the aftermath of the Battle for Marawi, and on criticism of the IS “second front” narrative.
